Coaching principles

Are you unhappy ? Do ou have trouble sleeping ? Are you having frequent back pain ? These have been my main 3 sufferings throughout the past decade. All of them were ultimately related to the fact that I wasn’t happy about myself, always trying to compare myself to others and ultimately not knowing who I really was. Countless hikes, most of them in the stunning national park of the Calanques allowed me to find my place as a person by finding my way off the beaten path.

As a real-life anecdote, it’s exactly during one of these hikes to the Calanques, in the abandoned “Couloir de Huberlutus”, that I found my initial inspiration to start my own venture. I had reached the deserted Calanques de Devenson, which is normal accessed only by boat as it takes close to 4 h walk across exposed terrain to get there. If I didn’t want to take exactly the same path back (for which there wasn’t sufficient time before sunset), I had to find an easy 4+ climb that would take me to a plateau from which I could then easily hike back to the col de la Candelle passing a number of spectacular views and caves. The only hint I got was to find a cypress on slightly red rock. Granted there are little reddish tints in the Calanques, yet there must be thousands of cypress trees. I spent over one hour looking for that little path to the climb, scaring myself more than once by ending up on a high cliff or just meeting a dead-end. Then believe it or not, after turning in circles for such a long time, I stopped to take a sip of water, looked down on the path after drinking, I saw the marking indicating my way out. That moment made me realise I had a reliable gut feeling. Even though I could under no circumstances express or let stand write down, why I wasn’t on the right track, my gut was telling me very subtilely but clearly that this wasn’t the right way and I had to keep on looking. Having been given this wonderful gift by nature, I would want to let other people benefit both from these unique places as well as finding your way.

The final aha moment happened only at the age of 48, when my own coach Nathalie was able to put a clear label to who I am: “you are a Zebra”. So-called Zebra’s are paraphrased as a combination of personalities with an above average IQ as well as a hypersensitivity. Instead the term high potential is really too much of a simplification as it only expresses the positive side. Meanwhile there are various downsides, that can be more or less limiting depending on how it’s expressed within you. Most importantly the classical terminology can often be perceived as a pressure, especially if you’ve not yet fully unleashed your potential. Technically Zebra’s are a mix of both High Performance Intelligence (HPI) and High Performance Emotional (HPE). While there are only 2.3% of HPI’s, I couldn’t find any reliable data as to how many HPE there are. As a (probably oversimplified) proxy, I’ve used the same percentage for HPE’s which would mean that there are less than 0.05 % of the combination. While not a huge ratio, with currently 7 billion people on this planet, my potential customer group still amounts to 350 million people, which is motivation enough to setup a business :-).

Even though I knew from intelligence tests that I had an above average IQ, I never fully realised that I also had a hypersensitivity. While this isn’t necessarily the case I was fortunate enough to be an excellent student, getting good grades with hardly any learning. Yet as a kid I was feeling different and had difficulty to be part of the cool guys. Later on I had difficulty to focus not because I wasn’t able to focus yet because I was following 3 conversations at the time. Also I was constantly getting a signal overload i.e. when making a presentation in front of a large audience I was scanning the facial reaction of all participants while talking and trying to adapt my message on the flow, which obviously turned out to be a total disaster.

The analogy between Zebra’s and high potentials relies on the following characteristics: firstly every Zebra is unique either through its stripe pattern or by the specific expression of your combination of intelligence and sensitivity. Secondly Zebra’s tend to be very strong animals or characters not being easy to tame in contrast to plain horses or donkeys. Last but not least the Zebra animal has a strong capability to adapt and resist both predators,  harmful insects and heat whereas the brain of a Zebra person is always in alert, constantly scanning for all kinds of signals, good or bad.

While I won’t go any further into any theoretical details my aim is simply to learn you how to deal with it and more importantly how to use your unique combination of skills as a true differentiator. Rather than being an unknowingly victim, you have all it takes to be an Olympic athlete.

Simply knowing that you’re not alone (which you never are by the way) and able to put a word on your feelings has been a great comfort to me. It largely helped me to recognise myself, as sort of the last piece of a very large living puzzle.

Certainly there are already thousands of coaches out there, psychology courses seem to be the hype of the decade, countless books have been written about the subject and yet here I am trying to find my spot in this crowded place. While I’m not even pretending to have followed a prime education at one of the major schools, I feel like I’ve got a story to share which can prevent others from making the same mistakes. My primary motivation for coaching is to do something that makes sense and create a real impact.

Through real life stories I strongly believe I can give some very practical advice to find your sweet spot. Some private examples which we can elaborate more in a first intake are the following:

  • Making the right choice about what company is good for you as the grass is never greener on the other side.
  • Dealing with unfair competition and jealousy at work.
  • Overcoming your fear to fail.
  • Mastering major setbacks i.e. loosing your job.
  • Getting back from both burn and bore-out etc…

Hope to explore some of your blind spots and let you discover both stunning scenery as well as yourself.
